Stencil & Customization Options Customization is what makes each workshop project unique. Participants use vinyl stencils to apply quotes, names, images, or seasonal designs to their piece. Our team teaches you:

How to properly align and transfer stencils

Painting tips to avoid bleeding and smudging
-
How to add accents with fine brushes or wood-burning tools
Engraving & Wood Burning Some of our workshops include laser-engraved elements prepared in advance, while others teach basic wood-burning techniques using pyrography tools. You can add personal details, shading, or textures to your project by hand with a steady, creative touch.
Fabric & Textile Projects We also feature textile-based workshops, including:
-
Chunky Knit Blankets – Learn the art of hand knitting with plush yarn, no needles required. We'll guide you stitch by stitch to create a warm, cozy blanket in your favorite color.
-
Custom Welcome Mats & Rugs – Using durable stencils, fabric-safe paints, and outdoor-grade materials, you’ll create a vibrant and functional mat that’s fully personalized.
Specialty DIY Projects Our Turkish Mosaic Lamp workshops are a customer favorite! Participants use a variety of hand-cut colored glass and beads to design and assemble a one-of-a-kind mosaic lamp. This guided workshop includes all materials and step-by-step instruction from our team.
No matter the project you choose, we’ll ensure you’re supported through every step — from setup and design to finishing touches and cleanup. You’ll leave with a finished piece you’re proud of, and possibly a new favorite hobby too!
Deep Dive: Creative Skills & Craftsmanship at Work
At the heart of every DIY workshop at Hammer & Stain Sierra NV is a chance to build confidence in using real tools and techniques. Our guests don’t just “paint and sip” — they develop hands-on skills they can take with them beyond the studio. Whether it's understanding wood grain direction or mastering the right pressure when applying paint, we emphasize not just creating something beautiful, but learning how to do it well.
During our wood sign workshops, you’ll learn how to work with raw materials — from sanding and prepping to layering paints and sealing for long-term durability. Our instructors explain why certain stains absorb differently across wood types, or how to create a distressed finish that feels aged but looks intentional. You’ll experiment with brush pressure, drying times, and learn how layering adds depth.
For textile-based projects, like chunky knit blankets, we focus on pattern repetition and hand tension — skills often overlooked in casual crafts. You’ll walk away with the muscle memory of basic knit techniques, confidence to replicate the process at home, and an understanding of materials that impact weight, warmth, and stretch.
Our welcome mat and rug sessions dive into color blocking, stencil blending, and techniques to achieve sharp lines on textured surfaces like coir or canvas. You’ll also learn how to prep your surface for long-lasting wear, including best practices for taping, paint saturation, and drying conditions.
In Turkish mosaic lamp sessions, the focus shifts to color theory and layout design. You'll develop spatial awareness and mosaic placement techniques while using tools like tile cutters, adhesives, and setting agents. It’s a lesson in both patience and pattern planning — and the result is a glowing piece of functional art.
These aren’t cookie-cutter classes — they’re immersive, educational experiences tailored to your creativity. Our goal is for every participant to walk out with more than a finished project — we want you to leave with new skills, fresh inspiration, and the confidence to keep creating.
